February 24, Mushroom Hunt

February 24, 2013:

This past Sunday many visitors enjoyed learning all about the world of mycology from guest lead, Gregg Miller.  He taught that mushrooms are in a biological kingdom of their own, and just as there are thousands of variations in the plant and animal kingdom, there are just as many in the fungi kingdom.  Patrons were treated to seeing many types and sizes of different mushrooms from the very tiniest pin-sized to nearly 4” high, and learning various ways to help identify them.  Culinarily speaking, Gregg stated if you cannot determine the species for sure do not eat it.  After a pleasant walk to the Mother Oak and finding more mushrooms there, he wrapped up by sharing other ways to learn about this interesting topic by contacting local mycology organizations and clubs.  Thank you very much to Gregg for his time and information.
