Owl Pellet Workshop

October 5, 2013   Five families walked in the quiet Reserve – listening, observing, and enjoying the wildlands – all while learning about owls.  Goldenbush flowers colored our path as we made our way to the Sister Oak along the Gato Trail.  Purple Vinegar Weed awakened our senses (wow!).  And sycamore trees brighten the blue sky with their fall colored leaves and their decorative green balls of mistletoe hanging from some of the highest branches.  While visiting the Mother Oak we spotted the owl box and learned about the scientists who study the Reserve’s Barn Owls.  After the walk, we settled down on a large tarp and became detectives – each person dissecting an owl pellet and uncovering the skulls, bones, claws, feathers and fur of the prey animal that the owl had eaten.  New discoveries and lots of fun filled this Saturday morning program out on the beautiful Reserve!
