August 10, 2013 Bat Walk

Prior to the walk, Bat Biologist, Stephanie Remington, educated the public on the importance of these wonderful mammals, what to do and not do if you find a bat as well as dispelling silly myths surrounding them; no they will not get caught in your hair and they are not blind among others!  We had a nice group of people who helped to count bats near one of the known roosts on the Richard and Donna O’Neill Conservancy. The bats emerged much earlier than usual, which was a surprise to us. We counted about 34 bats from 2 species emerging from some oak trees: the most common was the big brown bat. We had a beautiful clear night and were even able to view several constellations in the moonlight. One meteor from the Perseid Meteor Shower was visible on the drive off The Reserve. Thank you Stephanie for your expertise and Gary for your help throughout the event.
