Snakes 101 Lecture

April 9, 2014: Did you know venomous snakes use chemical cues to track their own venom if their prey gets away? Or that as cold-blooded animals snakes use ten times less energy than warm-blooded animals like us? These are just a few of the interesting facts Scott Gibson, Assistant Director of Research and Education at Audubon Starr Ranch, presented this week at the Snakes 101 lecture at The Reserve.  Scott gave the interested audience an in depth look at what makes a snake a snake such as their characteristics and behaviors, the senses snakes rely on for survival and the techniques snakes use when foraging for food. The evening concluded with three live native snakes for the audience to meet: a beautiful Coastal Rosy Boa, a rare-patterned California King and a vibrant Gopher Snake.
