North American Butterfly Association (NABA) Butterfly Walk

April 27, 2013:  It was a beautiful Saturday morning and NABA joined The Reserve and its patrons for a lovely butterfly walk where we saw both common and uncommon species, 10 types in total.  The most common was the Behr’s Metalmark Butterfly and the least common the Gold Hunters Hairstreak. Many people were amazed at the small size of the butterflies we saw this time of year.  Many just the size of your thumbnail.

We saw a tiny Brambles Hairstreak caterpillar on Deerweed, a Funereal Duskywing ovapositing (laying an egg) on the same Deerweed and also a lazy Bee Assassin gobbling up Harvester Ants right from their hole.

Thank you to Larry Shaw and NABA for sharing your expertise with The Reserve.
